Welcome to this week's special post. I'm finally moving past animating and now approaching new challenges. From now on till summer, I will be slowly bringing the world of the film to life with color.
That being said, I'd like to present to you the official, finalized color and lighting script of Mapmaker:
Woohoo! Right after finishing this absolute unit of a color script, I went ahead and drew the first background for the opening shot:
And here is a test of the idea of the camera movement for the opening shot:
Setting up and creating this background took 2 hours to do. The actual drawing took about 1 hour. Setting it up and figuring out how I should manage my layers for future comping, as well as create custom brushes for the paintings took the most time, however, it should be a lot smoother from now on.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the result. I'll still tweak the colors and values to my liking and adjust the export settings, but this is great for the film.
Alongside painting, I designed 4 tree brushes in clip studio, referenced by real-life native New Zealand trees:
I plan to make more foliage brushes for each new background type. These brushes will help accelerate my painting process and keep shape language consistent.
For the coming week, I plan to continue making four backgrounds, and also will attempt to start painting in color flats for the characters.
I'll see you next week!
